Porto Murdeira’s Environmental Platform- Sal

Published by admin on June 23, 2008 under News, Porto Murdeira, Sal

At present, there are 7 real estate projects being developed  on the East Coast of Sal, all of which are aimed at the tourism sector. While this can seem like a wonderful prospect for the country, I also understand how many are concerned with the negative impact these developments may have on the island. As a Capeverdean myself I share  such concerns, particularly those related to the environment. You see, Cape Verde’s biodiversity is of great global importance as it is home to endemic plants, birds, insects and marine species. Thousands of turtles nest in  Sal and Boa Vista every year, making Cape Verde the second most important nesting site  of the Atlantic Ocean.

Planificaciones Mundiales S.L. has taken such matters very seriously. Porto de Murdeira, 504 hectares of land, is the largest tourist development on the island of Sal, and with such a project naturally comes a feeling of responsibility and duty to the island and its inhabitants. According to national law, one is obliged to construct at least 80 meters from the ocean. Planificaciones Mundiales S.L., conscience of the importance of such a law has decided to construct 180 meters from the ocean. Originally, our Marina was to be built in an area that is environmentally sensitive as turtles use it as a nesting area. Taking this into consideration, Planificaciones Mundiales altered the entire project in order to accomodate the marina in a completely different location so as to avoid negatively affecting the many loggerhead turtles that nest in Sal each year. As a result, our project’s marina was the only one to be approved by the government as other developers refused to alter their projects for environmental reasons. In order to maintain the latter issues high on our list of priorities, Planificaciones has invited Luis Felipe Lopez Jurado, a well known biologist from the Canary Islands, to join our team of experts and professionals at Planificaicones Mundiales. Luis Felipe is the Cape Verde Project Director for the Canarian Institute of Marine Science and Professor at the Universidad Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

As a Capeverdean, if I am going to be part of a project that will affect my island by creating more than 50,000 beds, you better believe that project will be worth it.

Published by admin on June 5, 2008 under News

Last year marked the initiation of a joint cooperative between the Cape Verde Islands and the European Union. The relationship raised the expectations and ambitions of diverse parties ranging from common citizens of the archipelago to foreign investors and tourists who wish to facilitate their access to all the islands have to offer.Planificaciones Mundiales is happy to announce that the partnership between the European Union and Cape Verde is moving along in a positive direction. On Thursday June 5, both parties are set to sign a Joint Declaration on the Partnership of Mobility between the EU and Cape Verde.  Said declaration will facilitate the circulation of Capeverdeans within the European community via norms that will be defined in the accord. Not only will Capeverdeans have easier access to the European market, but the European Community will also benefit from the latter accord by having the Capeverdean government’s full collaboration in reinforcing illegal migratory flows. Both sides recognize the necessity and pleasure that is involved in opening its doors to those who wish to work or vacation in Cape Verde or any of the European Union countries and the declaration to be signed on June 5 illustrates that this step is one of many to be taken in ensuring that European as well as Capeverdeans are benefiting from the development boom that is occurring on the small archipelago.

Eco friendly Cape Verde to harness the wind

Published by admin on May 20, 2008 under 10 Islands, News, Sal

They may be a relatively new country, having only gained independence from Portugal in 1970, but you can’t accuse Cape Verde of not moving with the times. Keen not to be dependent on other countries for power, the government has announded a majpr investment programme of 140 million euros, most of it from major overseas investors.

Santiago

The islands targeted for wind farms are Santiago (above), Sal, Sao Vicente and Boavista and building is ready to start before the end of this year. Its a sign of the potential of Cape Verde, that securing foreign investment has been relatively easy, the main investor is a multi national country owned by five european countries.

The Cape Verde government sees this as just the start as they strive to keep up with demand for more power on the fast growing islands. In the near future, the governmment will invest 250 million euros in sustainable energy and has strong backing from the World Bank, the Aftican Development Bank and the Japanese Development Bank.

Sal

New figures from the Cape Verde government show that its rise in popularity among holiday makers, rose by 11.5 per cent in 2007, compared to 2006. As news of this investment hot spot spreads, more people are coming to see for themselves the miles of unspoilt beaches and the largely blank canvas that can become the home of peoples dreams.

Tourism is still in its infancy , the total number of visitors for 2007 was just 312,000 but the spread of nationalities is increasing, and as flights to the islands increase, demand will keep on increasing. Italy leads the way in tourism with 21 per cent of visitors but the UK is coming up on the rails behind them on 19.9 and surprisingly Portugal, the islands former owner, has been pushed into third slot.

Sal continues to be the most popular island with 70 per cent of all visitors, few can resist the lure of the unspoilt stretches of beach in Santa Maria, the stylish southern resort.
